Happy International Women’s Day one and all! I hope you get everything you want today, like increased wages and no cat-calling! If you’re at a loss for ways to celebrate this day, look no further than this gig-guide, which tells you some of the best female-focused shows happening tonight in London. Happy gigging!
Stefflon Don @ O2 Forum
Stefflon Don is one of the most exciting new talents to break into the mainstream in the last year. Steff knows exactly what she’s worth, this year signing a £1-million record deal which will see her create her own label under Polydor’s umbrella. She has been storming the charts with A-List collaborations from the likes of French Montana and Skepta, as well as establishing herself as one of the best female MCs in the UK. If you’re looking to be inspired by a woman who knows exactly what she’s doing, this gig is for you.
Superorganism @ Oval Space
Female-fronted Superorganism released their debut album last Friday, and in doing so cemented their place as the coolest kids on the block. They have 8 members, one of which is solely there for the visual element of their performances, so this is definitely a good one to catch if you can.
CoppaFeel @ Brixton East 1871
CoppaFeel – Britain’s charity encouraging everyone to check their breasts for signs of cancer – are hosting another of their legendary gig nights in Brixton tonight. The ladies at CoppaFeel always pull out all the stops at their interactive nights, which are always more than just gigs. Tonight they promise some top quality DJs to boogie to as you give your boobs a fondle (all in the name of health).
Let’s Eat Grandma @ Lightbox
Let’s Eat Grandma consists of two childhood friends Jenny and Rosa who have been making music together for the best part of a decade. Their debut I, Gemini was released in 2016 (to critical acclaim, I might add) displayed intellectual lyricism and an eerie brand of dark pop. You can check out their latest release, the indie-pop banger Hot Pink here.
Martha FFion @ The Waiting Room
The Waiting Room is one of the best intimate venues in London, boasting an impressive roster of artists. Tonight, Martha Ffion brings her dreamy folk-pop to the tiny stage for a evening of close musical-conversation.
Like A Woman @ JW3 – Jewish Community Centre
Featuring Michele from The Magic Numbers, the ladies at Like A Woman are interrogating the depiction of women through music. A host of impressive ladies are joining together for this IWD special where they reinterpret songs about ‘the girl’. There will be originals and reworkings of some of the classics by an all-female band.
Coven @ St John On Bethnal Green
Fancy some folk? Look no further than Coven’s special International Women’s Day gig. Featuring three of British folk music’s most formidable female acts, Coven will debut their new EP and celebrate all things female as they take the stage.
